This weeks blog features a wonderful trio of processes to create something rather beautiful. The wonderfully rich black cover is the one and only Colorplan Ebony from GF Smith, five layers of glorious white ink are then applied using our HP Indigo 7900. From here the cover moves onto our Heidelberg to be hot foiled in rose gold 6037 from the Foilco range, the finishing touch is the rose gold wire used to bind the book together.
This weeks blog features some rather dazzling books. Production time was of the essence with this project with only seven days to produce three thousands books in total. This would have been quite straight forward had it not be hot foiled in holographic gold 210F00 from the Foilco range onto GF Smith’s Colorpan Ebony. The team at Century HQ pulled out all of the stops to enable us to deliver another exceptional project on time.
For those of you that read our blog, you are probably well aware that we like a challenge here at Century HQ!!
So when this project landed in my inbox, I was rather excited. Printed using our HP Indigo 7900 onto Colorplan White Frost from the GF Smith range, before being triplexed with Colorplan Scarlet and foiled in 6210 & 6748 from the Foilco range.
With overlapping foil it proved tricky but successful with both client and end user being thrilled with the final results.
This weeks blog features some rather marvellous business cards. Foiled in iridescent SHLR777 from the fabulous Foilco range onto GF Smith’s Colorplan Imperial Blue. To see some of our splendid work, discuss a project or for more information contact one of the friendly team at Century Studios.
This weeks blog features a surprise 60th birthday invite. Unsurprisingly we opted for another great shade from the Colorplan range the marvellous 540gsm Smoke. Foiled in one of my favourite shades from the Foilco range the fabulous SHLR which changes colour in the light to flaunt all the colours of the rainbow. This weeks blog features some delightful business cards. We all love the modern age of print but you can’t beat a little old school hot foiling, it’s a timeless process we love very much at Century Studios. This project features GF Smith’s 350gsm Colorplan White Frost duplexed to 350gsm Colorplan Ebony to create 700gsm, with gold foil to both sides it doesn’t matter if its black or white it still looks epic. This weeks blog features a wonderful golden ticket Mr Willy Wonka himself would have been proud of. Printed with six layers of white ink onto GF Smiths Gmund Treasury Value before being Die-Cut to shape on our trusty Heidelberg platen. This weeks blog features some magnificent business cards. The deep purple is printed digitally onto GF Smith’s Mohawk Superfine Ultra White using our Indigo 7900, the cards have then been duplexed to 704gsm before being blind embossed to perfection. I think this picture sums up our attention to detail perfectly with 2mm borders it proved extremely tricky but as always we were up to the challenge. Foil blocking is something that Century Studios has been involved in for many years. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that we decided to bring it in house. By doing this, we have been able to speed up the production time enabling us to offer this beautiful process at a more competitive price.
The decision to bring foil blocking in house was calculated. Although the hot foil process requires a block or die, commonly made from magnesium or copper, it gives a far superior result. Far Superior than that of cold foil blocking, achieving a wonderful indentation to each project we produce.
The right equipment
The next question was what type of machine should we purchase? This was a very easy decision for Jon and I. Century Studios already has a Heidelberg Platen installed in the building. This much loved pieced of equipment, used for die-cutting a whole host of items. We have had this with us since we opened our doors and started our wonderful journey. Having never missed a beat or broken down, this German feat of engineering was the obvious choice when looking to upgrade our machinery.
After much research, we finally found a supplier who could provide us with a fully refurbished and converted Heidelberg Platen. With the combination and sheer brilliance of old and new technologies, we knew this would give us exactly what we were after. Next, we sourced a UK based foil supplier in Foilco. Foilco gave us access to the largest range of hot foil colours, different finishes and specialist pigment foils available.
So now, three years later and hundreds of diverse projects completed, including several for Foilco, we haven’t looked back.

This week’s blog features a luxury notebook. We were thrilled when we were asked to produce a collection of notebooks with the emphasis on luxurious materials and finishes. GF Smith’s Callisto Diamond White was selected for the covers, with gold foil to the face and singer sewn spines I think we hit the nail on the head with this one.
