This weeks blog features some magnificent business cards. The deep purple is printed digitally onto GF Smith’s Mohawk Superfine Ultra White using our Indigo 7900, the cards have then been duplexed to 704gsm before being blind embossed to perfection. I think this picture sums up our attention to detail perfectly with 2mm borders it proved extremely tricky but as always we were up to the challenge. Bringing Foil Blocking in house
Foil blocking is something that Century Studios has been involved in for many years. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that we decided to bring it in house. By doing this, we have been able to speed up the production time enabling us to offer this beautiful process at a more competitive price.
The decision to bring foil blocking in house was calculated. Although the hot foil process requires a block or die, commonly made from magnesium or copper, it gives a far superior result than that of cold foil blocking, achieving a wonderful indentation to each project we produce.
The right equipment
The next question was what type of machine should we purchase? This was a very easy decision for Jon and I. Century Studios already has a Heidelberg Platen installed in the building. This much loved pieced of equipment, used for die-cutting a whole host of items, has been with us since we opened our doors and started our wonderful journey. Having never missed a beat or broken down, this German feat of engineering was the obvious choice when looking to upgrade our machinery.
After much research, we finally found a supplier who could provide us with a fully refurbished and converted Heidelberg Platen. With the combination and sheer brilliance of old and new technologies, we knew this would give us exactly what we were after. Next, we sourced a UK based foil supplier in Foilco, giving us access to the largest range of hot foil colours, different finishes and specialist pigment foils available.
So now, three years later and hundreds of diverse projects completed, including several for Foilco, we haven’t looked back.

This week’s blog features a luxury notebook. We were thrilled when we were asked to produce a collection of notebooks with the emphasis on luxurious materials and finishes. GF Smith’s Callisto Diamond White was selected for the covers, with gold foil to the face and singer sewn spines I think we hit the nail on the head with this one. This weeks blog features a 20th year anniversary invite. When Katy from AEC approached us to produce this job she was concerned we wouldn’t be able to meet the tight deadline given. Not ones to shy away from a challenge we reassured her we were more than up to the task ahead. We went straight to work ordering the Peregrina Majestic Moonlight Silver from GF Smith, and the block for the embossing on the front cover. With both arriving before 12 the next working day we managed to complete the project within 3 working days, needless to say Katy was over the moon with the quality and service we provided. This weeks blog features some phenomenal invites. We started the process by duplexing GF Smiths 540gsm Colorplan Imperial Blue with 540gsm Pristine White to give a hefty 1080gsm. The reverse of the invite features Foilco’s clear gloss foil, the face was then foiled and gilt edged in 6754 to create this unusual but fantastic finish. This weeks blog features some rather captivating business cards. I always encourage customers to think very carefully about the business cards they produce, with this quite often being the first piece of marketing you leave with a potential customer. GF Smith’s Callisto Diamond White 350gsm has been duplexed with Colorplan Imperial Blue 350gsm to give 700gsm. Both stocks are FSC approved and produced here in the UK so thats a win win as far as I’m concerned. Further to that the cards have been foiled and gilt edged in Foilco’s gold 6628.
